Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - August 10, 2015 - Brooklyn's ace right-hander Gaby Almonte (6-3) tossed 8.0 shutout innings on the mound as the Cyclones defeated their cross-bridge rivals 7-0 Monday night. Third baseman David Thompson went 2-4 with a run, two doubles, and two RBIs in Brooklyn's victory, the 100th win over the Yankees in franchise history.
The Cyclones first made it onto the board in the second. After Thompson doubled to left field, a single from Hengelbert Rojas followed by a wild pitch from the Yankees' Yoel Espinal would bring the slugger home and give Brooklyn an early 1-0 lead.
Brooklyn bats heated up further in the third. Tucker Tharp hit a single and scored following a double by Vinny Siena. A walk for Michael Bernal loaded the bases with Cyclones and a single hit by Jeff Diehl notched a third run for Brooklyn.
Tharp leadoff the fifth with a walk and reached second on a throwing error by Espinal in a pickoff attempt with Siena batting. The second baseman went on to hit a single, pushing Tharp to third, and then stole second. A sacrifice fly by Thompson and a single from Diehl allowed Tharp and Siena to score a pair of runs for Brooklyn and push the 'Clones to a 5-0 lead.
The Boys of Summer did not settle with a five-run lead, though. Bernal reached on a throwing error by Staten Island shortstop Kyle Holder to begin the seventh and scored following a double by Thompson. Then in the eighth, Alfredo Reyes hit a bomb triple while Tharp and Siena each walked to load the bases with runners in navy blue. Enmanuel Zabala was then hit by a pitch, bringing Reyes home to polish off a great night of Brooklyn offense.
The Cyclones return to MCU Park Tuesday night in the final game of their three-game set with the Yankees. Right-hander Andrew Church (1-3) will take the mound for Brooklyn in the Cyclones' first game back home following an eight game road trip. It will also be NYPD Night at the ballpark and all fans are invited to run the bases post game. Tickets start at just $10, and are still available by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park Box Office, or right here at BrooklynCyclones.com.
