Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Wilkes Barre, PA -- Sean Bentivoglio scored the game winning goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation and Nathan Lawson made 35 saves as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers held off the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 2-1, Saturday night at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
The first period ended scoreless, but it was not for lack of action. Both goaltenders made some excellent save, including a sequence late in the period in which Penguins goaltender John Curry made a toe save on a slot shot by Jesse Joenssu leading to a transition rush for Wilkes-Barre that saw Lawson rob Konstantin Pushkarev with a sprawling glove save. Lawson made 14 saves in the opening period to keep the Penguins off the scoreboard.
Jesse Joensuu put the Sound Tigers on the board first, scoring his first goal of the year at the 3:45 mark of the second period. Justin DiBenedetto won a race to a loose puck in the Penguins zone but was denied in his stuff attempt by Curry. However, Joensuu swooped in behind the play and cleaned up the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second period, a fighting melee saw three players from each team ejected and Bridgeport's Pascal Morency called for a major boarding penalty. After wasting the first four minutes of the ensuing power-play, the Penguins tied the score with 6:33 left in the second. Dereyk Engelland hit Luca Caputi with a head-long pass and Caputi raced in and snapped a shot through Lawson's legs.
As the game wound down, Bentivoglio picked up a loose puck in the offensive zone after Tyler Haskins was denied on a scoring attempt and slapped it into the back of the net to give the Sound Tigers the win.
The game featured a total of 156 penalty minutes. The Penguins held a 36-31 advantage in shots on goal.
The Sound Tigers are back in action Monday when they host the Binghamton Senators in a special Columbus Day matinee. Face-off at the Arena at Harbor Yard is set for 1:00 pm. For tickets, please call Ticketmaster at 203-368-1000.
