Devils Rally Ends With 5-4 Loss to Sharks
October 10, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - Three power play goals for Worcester and four assists for defenseman Derek Joslin helped lead the Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Lowell Devils. Stephen Gionta and Matt Taormina each scored twice for the Devils as a third-period rally fell one goal short.
Trailing, 3-1, heading into the third period, Gionta got Lowell within one at 2:03 when he found a rebound in the slot and swept it in past goalie Tyson Sexsmith.
Dwight Helminen put Worcester back up by two with 5:30 left in regulation thanks to their third goal of the game on the man-advantage. Stationed in the slot, Helminen one-touched a feed past the leg pad of Gerald Coleman.
Lowell refused to go away quietly as Taormina made it 4-3 as his shot from in close deflected off a stick in front and over the shoulder of Sexsmith.
Logan Couture put the game out of reach on an empty net goal with 47.2 seconds left, while Gionta added his second of the night with 1.2 remaining on the clock.
Dan Silva gave Worcester a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game. Taormina would knot the score on the power play at 3:06 of the first with his first goal as a Lowell Devil.
The Sharks would pull ahead from there with two goals on the power play by Brandon Mashinter. The big forward tipped in Ryan Vesce's shot from the far circle to make the score, 2-1, at 7:23. Mashinter upped Worcester's lead to two as he was left alone in front on a two-man advantage to fire back a rebound.
Coleman stopped 28-of-32 in the loss for Lowell. The Devils finished 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-7 on the penalty kill.
The Lowell Devils battle the Portland Pirates on Sunday, October 11 at 4:00 PM. Full and partial season ticket packages are on sale now. For more information, contact the Devils at (978) 458-PUCK (7825) or visit lowelldevilshockey.com.
