Moose sweep Wolves
October 10, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose sacrificed the first goal of the night, but scored two consecutive markers to sweep the Chicago Wolves with a 2-1 score on Saturday night at the MTS Centre. Mike Keane and Michael Grabner both scored their third goals of the season while goaltender Daren Machesney stopped 30 attempts in his Moose debut. The Moose are now on their first winning streak of the 2009-10 season.
Manitoba received the first powerplay of the night when Jamie Hunt was put away for interference at 6:46. Despite bringing their shot count to five on the man-advantage, the home team couldn't break former Moose goaltender Drew MacIntyre in the short two-minutes.
The Moose returned the favor when Matt Pope was also penalized for interference at 10:47. Wolves centre and former Moose, Jason Krog, shot the puck at Daren Machesney but it slid past the post and hit the back boards; however, the bullet deflected back towards the net and Brett Sterling slapped the rebound into the open mesh, 1-0.
In the early minutes of the second period, Mike Keane dumped the puck into the visiting zone, but MacIntyre misplayed the puck and watched it slip through his legs to knot the game at one.
Manitoba benefited from their second powerplay when Nathan Oystrick was sent to the sin bin for interference. With four seconds left on the man-advantage and with a flurry of players in front of MacIntyre's net, Michael Grabner squeezed in his third of the season to gain the lead.
Near the midway point of the final frame, the Moose were leading in the shot department 28-26. The puck saw equal time on both ends of the ice, but neither goaltender would give and the Moose walked away with a 2-1 victory and weekend sweep over the Chicago Wolves.
