San Antonio Rampage News Release

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia - A night after a Rampage overtime victory that saw San Antonio and Abbotsford combine for eleven goals, 74 shots on goal, and 80 penalty minutes, the two clubs found themselves immersed in a slightly less action-packed battle at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre on Saturday. However, for Rampage defenseman Sean Sullivan, the game proved ever too familiar as the former Boston University Terrier scored his second overtime-winner of the weekend to help San Antonio defeat the Heat in overtime, 2-1.

Neither team found the scoreboard in a first period that included back-and-forth play and relatively few whistles. Rampage goaltender Josh Tordjman, receiving game action for the first time in 2009-10, turned away all 11 shots he faced in the first stanza.

Early in the second period, Abbotsford center Hugo Carpentier was whistled for high-sticking, providing San Antonio with an early power play. The Rampage immediately utilized the wider passing lanes to their advantage, finding the back of the net on a Kevin Porter goal at the 3:10 mark of the second. Moving the puck quickly to create space in the Abbotsford defensive zone, San Antonio defenseman Sean Sullivan gained control of the puck at the point and sent a pass across the blueline to Rampage teammate Kevin Porter, who immediately beat Abbotsford netminder Leland Irving on a long slap shot that was redirected by the stick of a Heat defenseman to give San Antonio a 1-0 lead.

Later in the second, during another San Antonio power play, defenseman David Schlemko turned the puck over at the blueline in San Antonio's offensive zone, providing Heat forward Jason Jaffray with a breakaway. Despite efforts by Rampage defenseman Shaun Heshka to stop Jaffray from speeding down the ice, the Heat left winger would skate all the way down the ice, deek Tordjman and beat the San Antonio goaltender with 1:05 left to even the game at 1-1.

Much like the first period, neither team found the scoreboard in the third, thus sending the game to overtime, marking San Antonio's third overtime in as many games.

The Rampage controlled play during the early minutes of overtime. As a result, a frustrated Abbotsford defenseman Ryley Armstrong took a costly slashing penalty that would eventually cost the Heat the game. On the power play, strong Rampage puck movement allowed play to remain in Abbotsford's defensive zone. With three minutes remaining, Porter found the puck on his stick on the left boards and sent a pass to Sullivan in the high slot. The Rampage defenseman immediately one-timed Porter's pass into the Abbotsford net to provide San Antonio with its second overtime victory in two nights.

The Rampage (3-0-1-0) travel to Cleveland on Tuesday to take on the Lake Erie Monsters at 7 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena. They will head to Houston on Friday to face the Aeros at 7:30 p.m. at the Toyota Center before hosting the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center for Faith Night.
