
Pirates Win Home Opener

Portland, ME - Paul Byron and Mark Mancari each scored once and added an assist to lead the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins in an American Hockey League game played tonight at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Nathan Gerbe and Kyle Rank also scored for the Pirates while Mike Weber collected two assists.
Vladimir Sobotka and Brad Marchant scored 5-on-3 power-play goals in the first to stake the Bruins to an early lead.
The Pirates improved to 1-2-0-0 with the win. Providence dropped to 2-1-0-0.
Providence led 2-0 after one. The Pirates exploded out of the second and scored three times in the opening five-and-a-half minutes to grab a 3-2 advantage, which they carried into the third period. Gerbe started the uprising with his second in as many games, as well as the Pirates first power-play goal of the season, just 1:19 in to the second. Mancari and Byron, with the first of his career, followed in the following 4:09 to give the Pirates a lead they would never relinquish.
The Pirates out shot the Bruins 36-30 in the game as Jhonas Enroth posted the victory.
The three stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Byron was the first, Weber the second and Mancari the third.
The Pirates will complete the weekend Sunday at 4 p.m. when they travel to Lowell to face the Devils. The game can be heard live on News Talk WLOB 95.5FM and on-line at www.portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 p.m.
