Bridgeport Islanders News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - Paul Thompson scored a shorthanded goal with 44 seconds left in the third to propel the Albany Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
The Sound Tigers earned a power play with 1:31 left to go in the game, but could not convert. After a mishandled puck at the point, Thompson burst through the neutral zone and fired a puck past David Leggio for the winner.
A back-and-forth first saw good chances for both sides before either saw a goal. Eventually, it was Scooter Vaughan opening the scoring with 5:38 left in the period, deflecting a point shot by Ryan Pulock through Devils netminder Scott Wedgewood. It was Vaughan's second goal of the season and second in as many games.
The Devils responded right back a little over two minutes later, as Paul Thompson came streaking in down the right wing in and fired a shot by Leggio. It was Thompson's league-leading fifth goal of the season after potting four in the Devils season opener against Adirondack.
After a scoreless middle frame, John Persson got Bridgeport back in front after he picked the top right corner on Wedgewood to make it 2-1. The Devils came right back once again, with Cam Janssen tipping home his first of the season to tie it back up at two.
That set the stage for Thompson, who ripped home his sixth goal in just three games. Although the Sound Tigers kept him off the board last night, they were unable to contain his speed on Saturday, ultimately leading to the game-winning goal.
Both teams were shut out on the power play, with the Devils going 0-for-3 and the Sound Tigers going 0-for-4, also giving up that crucial shorthanded goal. Leggio made 28 saves in the loss.
The Sound Tigers are right back at it tomorrow afternoon, coming back home for their first meeting of the season with the Springfield Falcons. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
Notes: Scooter Vaughan has two goals in his last two games after being named a healthy scratch yesterday...John Persson is now riding a three-game point streak...The Sound Tigers have not won in Albany since March 8, 2013 (0-6).
