Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were beaten by the Atlantic Division leading Portland Pirates 5-2 at home Saturday.
The Pirates scored the only goal of the first period at 15:36 when Dustin Penner notched his team-leading 28th of the season, shorthanded, off a feed from Joel Perrault for the 1-0 lead.
In the middle frame, Portland doubled its lead to 2-0 on Pierre Parenteau's 11th tally of the year an assist by Geoff Peters at 16:45.
It looked like the visitors would take the two-goal advantage into the second intermission, but with 0.7 seconds left in the middle frame, Bruno Gervais wristed home a power-play goal off assists from Alan Rourke and Chris Thompson to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was the 17th of the season for Gervais, which is tops among all AHL defensemen.
The Pirates regained the two-goal lead at 3-1 when Simon Ferguson scored his seventh tally of the season, unassisted, 2:22 into the third period off a turnover at the side of the Sound Tigers net.
The Sound Tigers made it interesting with their second power-play marker when Sean Bergenheim batted home his team-leading 21st goal of the season, with Jeremy Colliton and Robert Nilsson picking up the assists with 4:55 left to play.
The Pirates put the game out of reach when Parenteau notched his second goal of the game and 12th of the season, assisted by Aaron Gavey, at 18:12. An empty-net goal by Penner 40 seconds later, his team-leading 57th point, assisted by Perrault and Ryan Shannon, sealed the 5-2 victory for Portland.
Parenteau was the first star of the game, Penner the second and former Sound Tiger Dieter Kochan the third with 27 saves for the Pirates who had a 31-29 shots on goal advantage. Frederic Cloutier made 26 saves in a losing effort for the Sound Tigers who were 2 for 5 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.
