HERSHEY, PA - Left wing Tomas Fleischmann scored twice and goaltender Frederic Cassivi earned his third shutout of the season as the Hershey Bears blanked the Manchester Monarchs, 2-0, at the Giant Center in front of 8,388 fans on Saturday night.
Manchester (32-16-2-4, 70 points) is in second place in the Atlantic Division. Hershey (32-15-2-7, 73 points) is in second place in the East Division.
At 12:05 of the first period, Fleischmann fired a shot from the right face-off circle past Monarchs goaltender Barry Brust for a power play tally and a 1-0 lead for Hershey. Monarchs right wing Ryan Murphy sat in the penalty box for roughing and the Bears set up their power play. Defenseman Lawrence Nycholat, positioned at the left point, sent the puck to right wing Jakub Klepis deep in the Monarchs zone. Klepis sent a cross-ice feed, through traffic, over to Fleischmann at the right face-off circle where he scored his 19th goal of the season.
Fleischmann made it 2-0 at 12:45 of the third period with his second power play goal of the game and his 20th goal of the season. Right wing Eric Fehr darted into the Monarchs zone and handed the puck off to center Colin Forbes skating two steps behind Fehr. Forbes sent the puck over to Fleischmann at the left point and then drove hard to the net. Fleischmann fired a missile past Brust who was screened by Forbes.
Brust (14-7-1) stopped 30 shots in his seventh loss of the season. Cassivi (24-13-5) stopped all 28 shots he faced for his third shutout and 24th win of the season.
Manchester went 0-for-8 on the power play. Hershey was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
