Adirondack Phantoms News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Phantoms registered their second-highest single-game shot total of the season Saturday night when they fired 47 shots at Binghamton goaltender Kelly Guard. But Guard put himself in the way of 46 of those shots, backing his team to a 5-1 victory at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Senators jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the halfway mark of the third period. Jeff Heerema started the scoring just 3:58 into the first period when he grabbed a loose puck in the slot and fired it past Phantoms goaltender Martin Houle. Then, just 1:24 into the second period, Denis Hamel floated a long wrister through a screen and into the net.
In the third period, Joe Cullen and Brandon Bochenski scored early before the Phantoms ended Guard's shutout bid on the power play at 14:52. John Slaney was on the end boards to the right of the net and played a nifty backhand pass in front to Ryan Ready, who slammed it home to make it a 4-1 game. Hamel ended the night with his second of the game at the 17:42 mark.
The loss marked the first time in six games this season that the Phantoms have fallen to Binghamton in regulation. Houle finished the night with 30 saves on 35 Binghamton shots, while Guard took first-star honors with his 46-save effort.
The Phantoms return home Sunday to host the Manchester Monarchs in a 5:05 start at the Wachovia Spectrum. As always, kids tickets for all Phantoms games are just $8.00. Tickets are available online at www.phantomshockey.com or by phone at (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000.
