Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

Springfield, MA - Erik Christensen was the only member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to find the back of the Springfield net on Saturday night. And although he did it twice, the Penguins still fell to the Falcons, 2-1, in a shootout at the MassMutual Center.

Christensen opened the scoring for the Penguins (38-10-3-3, 82 points) by taking Noah Welch's cross-ice feed off the far boards, twisting around and then snapped a shot into the near corner over Jonathan Boutin's glove hand at 9:42 of the opening frame.

Despite out-shooting the Falcons 15-9 during the first two periods, the Pens couldn't manage more than the one goal. And the slim lead was erased when Marek Kvapil picked up a Jason Jaspers rebound in front of Dany Sabourin and pushed the puck just over the goal line. The Springfield tally came with nine-and-a-half minutes to play in the third.

Springfield outshot the Penguins 15-7 during the third period and overtime, but Sabourin stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced during the first 65 mintues.

Christensen opened the shootout by beating Jonathan Boutin, but none of the Penguins other shooters could solve the goaltender. And, after stopping the first two Springfield shooters, Sabourin was beaten by Jaspers and Dan Cavanaugh to give the Falcons their first shootout victory of the season.

NOTES: The Penguins conclude the New England portion of their nine-game road trip in Providence on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm...The Pens picked up a point in the shootout loss, and tied the team record for road points in a season with 41 (originally set in 2004-05).
