Hamilton, ON - Cam Severson scored two goals and Curtis McElhinney stopped 23 shots as the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights beat the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-2 on Saturday night at Copps Coliseum. It was the first game of a season-high five-game road trip for the Knights. The win moved the Knights into sole possession of fourth place in the West Division after Houston beat Iowa.

The game was scoreless after the first period in spite of two Hamilton powerplays and a 16-10 shot advantage for the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights.

The Bulldogs finally broke the deadlock early in the second period when Duncan Milroy ripped a pass from Maxim Lapierre past Curtis McElhinney at 2:37.

The Knights wasted little time tying the game. Richie Regehr took a shot from the blue line that bounced off goalie Yann Danis into the slot. His defenseman tried to slip the puck back to him to cover, but it came free, and Severson rammed it home to make it 1-1.

The Knights forged ahead on their first powerplay of the night. Zenith Komarniski took a shot from the left point that Dave Moss tipped past Danis for his 14th goal of the year, his 12th on the powerplay.

Then in the last minute of the period, Justin Taylor broke past the Hamilton defense, creating a two-on-one. He then threw a pass in front to Severson who tapped in his second of the game to put the Knights up 3-1 after two.

The Bulldogs drew to within one on a delayed penalty early in the third period. Jonathan Ferland threw a wrist shot past McElhinney to make it 3-2.

But the Knights responded with a shorthanded goal. Eric Nystrom hit Ajay Baines with a long pass. Baines converted on the breakaway for his first goal as a Knight, his fifth of the year.

The Knights got some insurance later in the period when Craig MacDonald knocked home a powerplay goal to make it 5-2. McElhinney was solid in just his second start in the last twelve games. The win was his eighth of the year.

The Knights are now 23-23-2-7. They have won five straight games, tying a season high. They've also won five straight on the road, a new season mark. They square off with the Bulldogs again on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Central time to finish the week. All the action can be heard on 1420 AM KOTK and on the internet at omahaaksarbenknights.com.
