SOUND TIGERS WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT
MATT KOALSKA
Center - Shoots: Left
Height: 6'0'' Weight: 205 lbs
Born: May 16, 1980 in St. Paul, Minnesota
Signed as a free agent with the Islanders on August 10, 2004
What is high school hockey like in Minnesota?
It is huge! Every kid grows up playing high school hockey hoping to one day be a Golden Gopher. The sport means a lot to everyone all over the state. If you are a player for any of the teams around the state, people know you and will recognize your name.
Speaking of being a Golden Gopher, what was it like for to win two NCAA National Championships with the University of Minnesota?
Two words...crazy and unbelievable. The first one was played at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota where the Wild now play, and just to have it in our own backyard was such an amazing experience with the great group of guys we had. To win one National Championship is great, but to win two in back-to-back years was something I will cherish.
What subject in school did you enjoy the most?
I graduated with a Communications degree and enjoyed all of the classes I took pertaining to my major. Being able to communicate with others, no matter what the setting, is an important skill that I am glad I now have.
What is your favorite thing to do in the off-season?
I go back home to St. Paul and just love spending time with my friends and going golfing. We also have retreats out to camp sites in the area and that is always a great time.
If you could sit down to dinner with any three people, who would they be?
First, I would be sitting next to Shania Twain because I am in love with her. Second would be Tiger Woods, because I can use all the help I can get on my golf game. Third would be the president, George Bush.
