San Antonio, TX (January 17, 2006) - Although any win, regardless of how it comes, is a good thing, their 4-3 shootout victory over the San Antonio Rampage on Tuesday evening at the AT&T Center should concern the Peoria Rivermen. Leading in the contest 3-1 late in the third period, the Rivermen allowed the Rampage to tie the game at 3-3 with two goals in the final 3:41 of regulation. Fortunately for the Rivermen, however, they were able to salvage the win with three clutch goals in the shootout round.

San Antonio left wing Doug Doull started the Rampage comeback with his first goal of the season. Skating the puck down the left-wing boards of the Peoria zone and down into the left corner, he bolted to the front of the net after reaching the end-boards. Perhaps surprising the Peoria defenders, Doull reached the front of the net unencumbered and whacked the puck past Rivermen goaltender Reinhard Divis at the door-step to pare the Peoria lead down to one goal at 3-2 at 16:19 of the third period.

The Rampage tied the game at 3-3 with the aid of a fortuitous bounce of the puck. Attempting to clear the puck out of the Peoria zone, Rivermen defenseman Mike Stuart threw it from left to right along the end boards. But the puck popped off of the boards in the right corner and bounded to Rampage winger Tim Jackman, who quickly moved the puck to his teammate Pascal Rheaume in the low slot. With a quick touch-pass, Rheaume got the puck to center Layne Ulmer at the left post for an easy tap-in goal that drew the Rampage even with the Rivermen at the 17:57 mark of the third period.

After the two teams skated through a scoreless overtime period, they went to a shootout to decide things. Each team converted its first and third shootout attempts and missed on its second and fourth shots. In the deciding fifth round, Rivermen right wing Jon DiSalvatore beat Rampage goalie David LeNeveu, and Divis stopped the shot of Jackman to seal a victory for Peoria.

The Rivermen improved their overall record to 20-15-1-2 with the shootout triumph, and they are now 8-9-1-1 on the road. The result pushes the Rampage's overall record to 12-25-1-2, and the San Antonio squad is now 7-13-1-1 at home.

The Rivermen jumped out to an early lead in this contest. Digging the puck out of the right corner of the San Antonio zone, Peoria right wing Mike Glumac passed it back to defenseman Aaron MacKenzie at the top of the right circle. MacKenzie then glided to his left into the high slot area, straight in front of the Rampage goal, and sent a low shot in on net that eluded LeNeveu. The Rampage goalie was unable to stop the puck because Rivermen winger Charles Linglet tipped it as it slid down the slot to pick up his sixth goal of the season just 1:14 into the first period.

Early in the second period, the Rampage roared back to tie the game at 1-1. Carrying the puck down the left-wing boards in the Peoria zone to below the goal line, San Antonio left wing Doug Doull dished it back to his centerman Layne Ulmer, who was trailing the play. After he received the puck below the left circle, Ulmer put a low shot through the skates of Divis at the 2:20 mark of the middle frame.

Linglet struck for Peoria again after right wing Colin Hemingway got off a heavy shot from the top of the right circle that rebounded into the slot. Skating across the goalmouth from left to right, Linglet picked up the puck, moved to the right post, and backhanded the puck up over LeNeveu's left legpad for his second lamp-lighter of the evening at 6:12 of the second. His seventh score of the year gave the Rivermen a 2-1 lead.

The Rivermen went up 3-1 thanks to the work of center Blake Evans. Extracting the puck out of a group of players on the right-wing boards in the San Antonio zone, Evans settled the puck as he skated into the right circle. He then fired a wrist shot that glanced off of the crossbar and into the Rampage goal over LeNeveu's right shoulder at 11:11 of the second period.

The Rivermen will now spend this week in San Antonio awaiting another match-up with the Rampage on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the AT&T Center.
