Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-3 in the shootout on the road Wednesday. It was the fourth straight win in the season series and second in back-to-back meetings overall against the AHL's top team for the Sound Tigers.
Sean Bergenheim extended his goal streak to three games and point streak to four with his team-leading 14th goal of the season with 1:22 left in the first period giving the Sound Tigers 1-0. Robert Nilsson and Matt Koalska assisted on the opening tally.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tied the score at 1-1 when Rico Fata swatted home his sixth goal of the season from his off wing 5:36 into the middle frame with Paul Bissonette and Matt Hussey earning the assists. However, the Penguins went shorthanded on a cross-checking call to Daniel Carcillo just eight seconds later, and the Sound Tigers regained the lead on the ensuing power play when Allan Rourke slipped his seventh tally of the year, and third in the series, just between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton all-star goaltender Dany Sabourin on the post at the 7:39 mark off assists from Steve Regier and Wyatt Smith to make it 2-1.
The Sound Tigers took the largest lead of the game at 3-1 on a highlight-reel goal by Nilsson who cradled the puck up off the ice and onto his stick and then stuffed it under the cross bar for his sixth marker of the season off assists from Smith and Bergenheim with 7:56 left in the middle frame. The goal light did not go on until Smith put the rebound into the net, but referee David Banfield awarded to goal to Nilsson.
Fata pulled the Penguins to within 3-2 with a power-play goal, his second goal of the game and seventh of the season, 5:21 into the third period off assists from Noah Welch and Erik Christensen.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton then tied the game at 3-3 with 7:50 left in regulation when Andy Schneider pulled the puck off the boards at the left point and threw a wrister through traffic for his third goal of the season off assists from Daniel Fernholm and Jonathan Filewich.
The Sound Tigers carried a power play from the end of regulation and into the start of overtime, but neither club was able to score in the extra session.
In the shootout, Christensen gave the Penguins at 1-0 edge after one round, but Sound Tigers netminder Frederic Cloutier, who made 41 saves through regulation and overtime, denied the next four attempts he faced, including the deciding stop on Arpad Mihaly in the bottom of the fifth round. Nilsson and Jeremy Colliton scored in the third and fourth rounds respectively to give the margin of victory to the Sound Tigers who are now 2-2 in shootouts this season.
Cloutier was the first star of the game, Fata the second and Schneider the third. Sabourin made 20 saves in a losing effort. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 4 on the power play while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1 for 9 and had a 44-24 shots on goal advantage.
The Sound Tigers will host the Providence Bruins this Friday at 7:05 p.m. before returning to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Philadelphia Phantoms this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. on Wade Dubielewicz Bobblehead giveaway night and the Syracuse Crunch this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. on Islanders 25th Anniversary puck giveaway night.
