Abbotsford Heat News Release
Cleveland, OH - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Barons on Wednesday night at Quicken Loans Arena. The Knights shrugged off a one-hour delay to the game because of ice conditions to pick up their 17th win of the year.
The Barons opened the scoring off a nifty passing play. Tomas Plihal drew Brent Krahn out of the net and then dropped the puck back to Josh Prudden who crashed the net and knocked home his ninth of the year.
The Knights tied the game on the powerplay. Mark Giordano's shot skipped wide of the Cleveland net, but Carsen Germyn dug the puck back in front where Eric Nystrom slipped in a backhander.
Omaha then took the lead at 15:03 of the period when Germyn converted the rebound of a shot by Chris Neiszner. His spinning backhander beat goalie Nolan Schaefer for his team-leading 20th goal of the year.
The Barons tied the game midway through the second period when Josh Hennessy popped a rebound over Krahn. The 2-2 tie, though, was short lived.
The Knights went back on the powerplay, and Justin Taylor finished off a slick passing play with Tomi Maki and Richie Regehr, who had just returned from Calgary. He rammed home his tenth goal of the year to make it 3-2.
Just 27 seconds later, Lynn Loyns got free for a partial breakaway. He was dragged down and referee Dean Morton called for a penalty shot, the first in Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' history. Loyns didn't miss against his former team, beating Schaefer for his fourth goal of the year. The Knights led 4-2 at the break. That lead held up through the third period.
The Knights are now 17-21-1-7. They return to action on Friday when they host the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7:00 p.m. They visit the Iowa Stars on Saturday and then return home on Sunday to host the Peoria Rivermen at 5:00 p.m.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
