Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Saint John Flames 5-2 at home Wednesday. Matt Higgins and Trent Hunter, with a goal and an assist apiece, and Justin Mapletoft, with two assists, led the way in the victory. Goaltender David St. Germain also made 29 saves for his first AHL win of the year.

The win snapped a 13-game regulation winless streak, 2-8-2-1, and a three-game overall winless streak, 0-2-0-1, for the Sound Tigers who notched only a 2-1 overtime win on the road versus the Philadelphia Phantoms on January 8th and a 3-2 extra-session victory, also on the road, against the Worcester IceCats on January 19th since they beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 3-1 at home on December 23rd.

Robert Dome gave Saint John a 1-0 lead at 8:33 of the first period with his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Brent Kelly and Jason Morgan. The 1-0 lead held up through the end of the first period.

Just 1:51 into the second period, Martin Chabada tied the game at 1-1 knocking the puck out of mid-air for his seventh goal of the season on assists from Ray Schultz and Jeff Hamilton. Higgins then put the Sound Tigers up 2-1 with a shorthanded, breakaway goal, his 11th tally of the year, at 10:36, assisted by Justin Mapletoft.

Saint John tied the game at 19:30 of the second period as Kelly scored his fifth goal of the season from Jayme Filipowicz and Darcy Verot, but Brandon Smith gave the Sound Tigers a 3-2 lead with :01.9 left in the middle frame with his sixth goal of the year on assists from Trent Hunter and Eric Manlow.

Saint John pulled Goaltender Levente Szuper for an extra attacker with 1:30 remaining in the game, but Hunter scored into the empty net on a sharp-angle shot for his 17th goal of the season at 18:58, on assists from Mapletoft and Higgins, giving the Sound Tigers a 4-2 lead. Jeremy Adduono also added an insurance tally, his fifth goal of the season, at 19:36 on an assist from Konstantin Kalmikov.

The Sound Tigers were 0 for 4 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill. The shots on goal were tied at 31 apiece. Higgins was named the number one star of the game, Smith number two, and Martin Chabada was number two.
