(HERSHEY, Pa., Jan. 29, 2003) - Former Phantom Eric Bertrand recorded a goal and two assists to lead the Hershey Bears to a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia tonight at the GIANT Center.

Goaltender Phil Sauve finished with 24 saves, while Mark Freer, another former Phantom, and Steve Brule each added a goal and an assist to help Hershey end an eight-game winless streak (0-5-3). The Bears also won at home for the first time in six tries and took a 4-3 lead over Philadelphia in the season series.

Neil Little registered 20 saves for the Phantoms, who have dropped five games in a row. The losing streak is a season high and the longest by the team since a six-game skid from Dec. 17-30, 2000, which ties for the longest in club history.

Ben Stafford scored the lone goal as Philadelphia has tallied just three goals during its five-game losing streak. The four goals allowed by the Phantoms were also the most since a 5-1 loss at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Dec. 21.

Hershey opened the scoring 4:18 into the game on Jordan Krestanovich's sixth goal of the year. Charlie Stephens and Tim Wedderburn worked the puck to Krestanovich, who skated between the circles and backhanded a shot past Little.

Freer made it a 2-0 game 3:30 later during a 2-on-1 rush. Brule crossed into the Phantoms zone with the puck and closed in on Little before centering it to Freer for an easy one-timer. Bertrand also assisted on Freer's 15th goal of the season.

Stafford narrowed the deficit to 2-1 at 6:01 of the second period during a 4-on-4 situation. Bruno St. Jacques took the initial shot from the far circle and Stafford was there to follow it in for his eighth marker of the year.

But Bertrand answered 94 seconds later with his own follow-up goal to up the margin to 3-1. Stephens and Cail MacLean set up Bertrand's 11th goal of the season. Brule later widened the gap to 4-1 after receiving a pass from behind the net by Freer. Bertrand also assisted on Brule's fifth goal with 6:36 to play in the middle stanza.

Philadelphia is back in action at 3:05 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 1 against the defending Calder Cup champion Chicago Wolves. The game at the First Union Center will be televised live on CN8.
