April 18, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY - Johan Sundstrom scored with 97 seconds left in overtime Friday, giving The Bridgeport Sound Tigers the win and handing the Adirondack Phantoms a loss in its final game at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Sound Tigers' Mike Halmo sparked a comeback when he scored the tying goal at 6:16 mark of the third period. The Sound Tigers outshot the Phantoms 32-28 and goaltender Kevin Poulin picked up his third win of the season.
The game marked a number of firsts. The Sound Tigers' Ryan Pulock picked up his first point as a professional, assisting on Halmo's goal. Josh Holmstrom also notched his first pro point, assisting on Scooter Vaughn's shorthanded goal in the second period. The Phantoms' Shayne Gotisbehere played in his first professional game after a stellar three years at Union College. Gotisbehere led Union to the national championship two weeks ago, a trip that started by winning the NCAA East Regional championship at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport last month. He was drafted and signed by the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers.
A raucous, record-setting sellout crowd of 5,586 said goodbye to the Phantoms Friday. The team is moving to a new arena in Allentown, PA and will be called the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The future of pro hockey in Glens Falls is undetermined.
The Phantoms got on the board first when Brandon Alderson scored at the 4:26 mark. The first period saw numerous scuffles and misconducts, including diminutive Sound Tiger Joey Diamond fighting 6'6'' Oliver Lauridsen. The Phantoms made it 2-0 at 12:32 in the second period when Derek Whitmore scored on the power play.
Vaughn's shorthanded goal at 7:20 in the third was his tenth of the year. Aaron Ness and Holmstrom picked up the assists. Halmo scored his 18th on a snapshot from the right-wing boards. Ness and Pulock assisted.
In overtime, Sundstrom scored after a turnover in front of Phantom's goaltender Tony Capobianco. The victory is the Sound Tigers' first in 12 games. The Sound Tigers play its final game of the season Saturday night in Hartford against the Wold Pack.
