February 27, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (38-11-2-1) got a pair of goals from each from Jalen Luypen and Carter Souch as they picked up their eighth straight win by defeating the Prince Albert Raiders (19-28-2-1) by a 5-2 final at Rogers Place.
Despite a sluggish first period that saw the Oil Kings get outshot by a 7-3 count, they took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission thanks to a goal from Luypen.
At 6:55 of the first period, the Chicago Blackhawks prospect was able to bunt home a bouncing puck in front of the Prince Albert net during a mad scramble for his 20th goal of the season.
In the second period, the Oil Kings would get back to their high shot volume ways ripping 16 shots the way of Raider goaltender Tikhon Chaika and beating him three times.
Luypen added his second goal of the game just 4:38 into the middle stanza after Carson Golder made a nice play to intercept a puck in the left-circle, fire a shot on net that created a rebound that landed on the tape of Jaxsen Wiebe who would lay the puck across the goalmouth to an open Luypen for the tap in.
The Raiders answered back just over a minute later as former Oil King Carson Latimer finished off a three-on-one rush between himself, Sloan Stanick and Reece Vitelli.
In the latter half of the period, Souch would bury consecutive goals to give Edmonton a 4-1 lead at the second intermission. First, at 12:43 of the period, Souch took a pass in the right-circle from Ethan Peters and launched a shot over the glove of Chaika to make it a 3-1. Then, 2:05 later, Souch's second goal came as he was able to grab a rebound off a booming blast from Justin Sourdif and tuck it past Chaika to give himself a new career-high in goals with his 19th of the campaign.
In the third period, the Oil Kings and Raiders exchanged goals late in the game. Dawson Seitz briefly made it a 5-1 Edmonton lead with his fifth of the season after he took a beautiful neutral-zone feed from Brendan Kuny, sped into the left-circle and snapped a shot over the mitt of Chaika.
The Raiders closed the gap back to three just over 90 seconds later as Dallyn Peekeekoot tipped in a point shot on a Prince Albert power play, but that would be as close as the visitors would come.
Kolby Hay registered his fifth straight win making 22 saves, while Chaika made 26 saves in the losing cause. The Oil Kings went zero-for-three on the power play, the Raiders were one-for-five.
Next up, the Oil Kings continue their six-game homestand on Wednesday night when the Medicine Hat Tigers pay a visit to Rogers Place at 7:00 PM.
