Pats Pick up Big Point in Overtime Setback to Hitmen

February 27, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

Calgary, Alta. - The Regina Pats gave it everything they had in the final game of a 3-in-3 road trip in Calgary, but were only rewarded with a single point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Hitmen on Sunday.

Regina had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 in the game, but Calgary tied it each time and then won the contest 2:05 into overtime off the stick of Blake Stevenson. It's the third time this season the Hitmen have defeated the Pats in extra time (two in overtime; once in a shootout).

Layton Feist, Easton Armstrong and Cole Carrier provided the offence for the Pats, with Connor Bedard recording a pair of assists, increasing his point streak to 12 games in the process (13G-12A). Affiliate player Raiden Zacharias, who was called up for the road trip from the Saskatoon Blazers due to injuries, recorded his first career WHL point with an assist on Feist's goal.

The shots on goal on Sunday favoured the Hitmen 34-31. The Pats only had one power play all afternoon, but went 3-on-3 on the penalty kill, including killing off a crucial 5-on-4 in the final two minutes of regulation with the score tied 3-3.

With the Pats picking up just the single point on their road swing, they are now five points out of the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

THE GOALS

1st Period

REG 1-0 at 10:49 - Layton Feist (5), assisted by Connor Bedard and Raiden Zacharias // Zacharias fed the puck ahead to Bedard in the neutral zone, who entered down the right wing. Bedard then whipped a spin-o-rama backhand pass to the middle to Feist, who had joined the play. Feist ripped a wrist shot to the top corner, with Howe in front serving as the screen.

2nd Period

CGY 1-1 at 6:21 - Maxim Muranov (5), assisted by Grayden Siepmann and Brayden Peters // Muranov let a shot go from the top of the left circle off the rush that went glove side past Pyne.

3rd Period

REG 2-1 at 5:07 - Easton Armstrong (4), assisted by Connor Bedard and Tanner Howe // Another goal off the rush, this time after Bedard dished to his right to Armstrong, who was in tight but chipped it over the glove of Peters.

CGY 2-2 at 7:13 - Riley Fiddler-Schultz (24), assisted by Sean Tschigerl // Fiddler-Schultz threw the puck to the net from the bottom of the circle and it founds it's way into the back of the net.

REG 3-2 at 10:26 - Cole Carrier (15), assisted by Jakob Brook and Braxton Whitehead // Whitehead helped create a 2-on-1 by chipping it down the right wall to a spot where Brook could get to it. Brook then centered the puck for Carrier, who was busting to the net and one-timed it. Although Peters got a big chunk of Carrier's shot, it just squeaked under the pad and over the line.

CGY 3-3 at 12:01 - Riley Fiddler-Schultz (25), assisted by Sean Tschigerl and Trey Patterson // Tschigerl entered the Pats zone on the left wing and dropped a pass into the middle for Fiddler-Schultz, who was wide open in the slot and fired it home.

Overtime

CGY 4-3 at 2:05 - Blake Stevenson (19), assisted by Riley Fiddler-Schultz and Brayden Peters // Fiddler-Schultz was stopped on the 3-on-2 rush, but Stevenson was there to bat home the rebound out of the air.

THEY SAID IT

Pats Assistant Coach Ken Schneider: "We played a tremendous hockey game as far as I'm concerned. Three games in three nights: I thought our guys gave us a really, really gutsy performance today. We earned the point we got and we probably should have deserved better, but that's how it's gone so far for us this season...Over the course of the weekend, we're playing some people that just don't get the minutes they [normally] get and we're really seeing some growth in our young [players]. I firmly believe there's better days ahead for us, there's no question. We need a little help, especially when you give a goal up and when you score, that's the key to success, is the next shift has to be a real strong shift. We've had some trouble there giving up a couple weak goals."
