Regina Pats News Release

Red Deer, Alta. - The Regina Pats turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-3 advantage against the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday night thanks to a four-goal second period, but they lost the contest 6-4 after a controversial goal from Ben King held up as the game-winner.

Scoring in the second period for the Pats were Connor Bedard, Ryker Evans, Zane Rowan and Adam McNutt.

The Rebels tied the game 4-4 midway through the third period, and two and a half minutes later they took the lead. Both goals came on the power play. The go-ahead 5-4 goal was reviewed, as it didn't appear the puck completely crossed the goal line, but it was upheld because the call on the ice was a legal goal.

Bedard increased his point streak to 11 games, during which he has scored 13 goals and added 11 assists for 24 points. His 62 points are tied for 11th in the Western H0ckey League and his 33 goals are tied for sixth. Evans also continued his hot play, registering a goal and an assist. He now has 52 points this season, which ranks third amongst all WHL defencemen.

Regina was out-shot 39-22 in the game. They went 1-for-3 on the power play on Friday, and the Rebels went 2-for-4 on their man advantage.

THEY SAID IT

Pats Assistant Coach Brad Herauf on the strong second period: "They're a big, strong team. They've got a style of hockey that kind of contrasts to what we are right now with the lineup we have, so they implemented their game plan right away. I think when we started skating and winning puck races, I think we started turning the game more into our style."

Herauf on the third period: "I thought we started out really well [in the third]. I thought the first 10 minutes we carried most of the play. I thought we played the game that we wanted to play against them. We wanted to keep them skating. We didn't want to sit back on them and that's exactly what we did for the first 10 minutes [of the third]...

Herauf on the controversial game-winning-goal: "[The referee] thought the puck crossed the line on the ice. So he guessed at that, because clearly on the replay it didn't cross the line, so they went upstairs and it was inconclusive because the puck didn't cross the line because it was underneath [Sim]...but since it was called on the ice it was a goal, they can't reverse that."
