December 29, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Orlando Solar Bears News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Solar Bears (10-13-2-3) proud affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Toronto Marlies, fell to the South Carolina Stingrays (18-10-2-1) by a 5-3 score in front of 5,665 on Tuesday night at the Amway Center.
Jared Staal opened the scoring early for the Stingrays just seven seconds into the contest when he stripped a Solar Bears defenseman of the puck off the opening faceoff and wired a shot past the glove of Rob Madore.
Colin Mulvey extended South Carolina's lead to 2-0 at 4:16 when he recovered a loose puck and snapped the puck past Madore.
The Solar Bears got on the board thanks to a one-timer by Max Nicastro from the left point that beat Branden Komm at 6:05.
Andrew Rowe restored the two-goal lead for the Stingrays at 7:06 when he corralled the puck in the slot and managed to fire off a shot after completing a 360-degree spin.
Nicastro scored again for the Solar Bears at the 1:33 mark of the Solar Bears with another one-timer after a faceoff win in the attacking zone.
Minutes later Rowe would be awarded a penalty shot at 5:43; it was the first penalty shot the Solar Bears have faced this season, and Madore was able to deny Rowe's attempt at a second goal on the night with a glove save.
Brady Vail then drew the Solar Bears even at 3-3 when he knocked home a loose puck in the crease off a deflected centering feed from Eric Faille at 12:51.
The Stingrays pulled ahead in the third period when Paul Rodrigues converted for a power-play goal at 13:00.
Nick Jones sealed the game for South Carolina with an empty-net shorthanded goal at 18:54.
Madore took the loss with a 37-save performance on 41 shots against; Komm earned the win with 21 saves on 24 shots against.
