Snappers mount massive comeback in suspended game, drop nightcap

Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Thursday's games at Pohlman Field technically did not qualify as a double-header, but the Snappers and LumberKings ended up playing a total of 15 innings on the day thanks to a rainout on Wednesday night. Beloit mounted an impressive comeback in its 11-6 victory in the continuation of Wednesday's suspended game; a similar rally fell short in the nightcap, however, with Clinton coming out on top, 3-2, in a seven-inning affair.
Beloit and Clinton only got in one inning of their game that was originally scheduled for Wednesday, though that inning was an eventful one. Two batters after an RBI double from Marlins No. 27 prospect Christopher Torres, Sean Reynolds hit perhaps one of the most majestic home runs in Pohlman Field history. His two-run moonshot exploded off the bat with an exit velocity of 115 MPH and traveled a projected 495 feet, leaving the right field wall far behind.
The LumberKings continued their early onslaught when the game resumed early Thursday evening. Reynolds and Marlins No. 10 prospect Will Banfield jumped on Snappers right-hander Adam Reuss- taking over for Bryce Conley (1-3, 3.60 ERA), whose start was ruined by rain- for back-to-back RBI knocks in the second inning. An error by Beloit third baseman Cobie Vance in the third inning allowed yet another run to score, extending Clinton's lead to 6-0.
That was all the LumberKings would get, however, and the Snappers started to chip into the deficit in the bottom of the third. A John Jones sacrifice fly put Beloit on the board before JJ Schwarz's first Snappers hit, a two-RBI single, cut Clinton's lead in half. An RBI single from Athletics No. 16 prospect Marcos Brito in the sixth further closed the gap, and then back-to-back run-scoring singles from Skyler Weber and Max Schuemann in the seventh tied the game at 6-6.
Brito quickly broke the knot with another RBI single, but the Snappers weren't done there. Devin Foyle's safety squeeze in the eighth inning set the stage for a three-run blast from Schwarz, his first of the season.
The seven-inning nightcap was not nearly as eventful. Beloit's bats were held silent by Clinton starter Jake Walters (0-0, 2.57 ERA), who fired four shutout frames while allowing just one hit and striking out eight. The LumberKings' three runs came courtesy of RBI singles from Jerar Encarnacion and Marcos Rivera, as well as a run-scoring triple off the bat of Marlins No. 5 prospect Connor Scott. The Snappers eventually got on the board with Joseph Pena's two-out RBI single in the seventh, but, unlike the first game, Clinton's bullpen put out the fire.
The greatest takeaway from these 15 innings is that Schuemann has become an offensive catalyst in an otherwise dormant Beloit hitting order. The utility infielder had a career performance in the continued game, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI. Schuemann followed that up by going 1-for-3 in the second game, improving his already
impressive average to .500. Schwarz, who was hitless in his first two games as a Snapper, broke out with two hits and five RBIs in the first game.
The Snappers hit the road tomorrow, starting their seven-game trip with four in Kane County. Chase Cohen (4-4, 7.62 ERA), who has been roughed up to the tune of a 13.72 ERA over his past five starts, will look to bounce back versus the Cougars' Ryan Weiss (1-4, 4.69 ERA).
