South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: After being swept by the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the previous road series, the South Bend Cubs responded with a 4-0 shutout win over the West Michigan Whitecaps in the first of a seven game homestand from Four Winds Field. Riley Thompson cruised his way through six innings of shutout baseball in his third win of the season.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Cubs faced a deficit when right fielder Nelson Velazquez needed to exit the game in the middle of his first at-bat. Delvin Zinn came off the bench and had to attack a two-strike count. On the first pitch he saw, Zinn rocketed a line drive to the shortstop but West Michigan recorded the out to end the inning.
In the 2nd, Rafael Narea laid down a bunt with Tyler Durna hustling around second base. As the pitcher Hugh Smith fielded the ball, he airmailed first base and Durna jogged home for the game's first run. Narea tried to stretch it into a two base error, but was thrown out sliding into third base.
With Thompson cruising, the Cubs got him even more run support with a three run 3rd inning. Zinn got a bit of revenge and drove in D.J. Artis. Later on, Cole Roederer jogged home on a wild pitch and Tyler Durna brought in Jonathan Sierra on an RBI groundout.
The run support was plenty for Thompson. The tall right-hander finished with six strikeouts, no runs, and zero walks in his six innings of brilliance.
Out of the bullpen, Jack Patterson continued his hot stretch with two scoreless frames. In six of seven appearances this year, Patterson has given up a one or less. Closer Ethan Roberts shut the door in the 9th to earn South Bend's 25th victory.
With the win, Manager Buddy Bailey is now just eight wins away from 2100 and three wins from 9th place on the all-time Minor League wins list. The Cubs and Whitecaps will continue their four game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
