Clinton LumberKings News Release
BELOIT, WI - The Clinton LumberKings came away with a split of a doubleheader with the Beloit Snappers at Harry Pohlman Field on Thursday night. Clinton (24-22) blew a six-run lead to fall 6-11 to the Snappers (16-29) and then held on in game two for a 3-2 win.
GAME ONE
The game began on Wednesday night before rains forced a suspension. Prior to the rain, the LumberKings struck first with a three-run rally in the top of the first. Christopher Torres tripled home the first run of the game - Connor Scott - and two batters later was followed by Sean Reynolds seventh home run of the year. The home run was estimated to have traveled 495 feet with an exit velocity of 115 MPH.
The game was then suspended after four pitchers were thrown in the top of the second inning and concluded on Thursday night.
When the game resumed, the LumberKings picked up right where they left off. Will Banfield continued the scoring with an RBI single to center and was then chased home on a Reynolds RBI double.
Clinton added their final run of the game in the top of the third without a hit to stretch their lead to 6-0.
Beloit began to chip away in the bottom of the third. George Soriano struggled to throw strikes in the inning - walking two batters and throwing a wild pitch - leading to a three-run Snappers rally.
Soriano allowed his final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Max Shuemann - who led the way with a 4-for-4 performance that included three doubles - opened the inning with a double and scored on a Marcos Brito single.
Nathan Alexander came in to relieve Soriano in the seventh inning and surrendered the lead when the Snappers stuck for their second three-run rally of the game.
Alexander (0-2) was given the loss for his time out. He threw 1.2 innings and left following a three-run home run by J.J. Schwarz in the bottom of the eighth that put the game out of reach.
Michael Danielak (1-0) earned the win for Beloit for a 1.1 inning outing. He held Clinton to just one walk over his time out striking out two batters and allowing no hits.
GAME TWO
The LumberKings started the scoring in game two in the top of the first inning. Aiden McIntyre started for Beloit and set down the first two batters of the game before allowing a two-out rally. Demetrius Sims was hit by a pitch - moved to second on a Sean Reynolds walk - and scored on a Jerar Encarnacion single up the middle.
In the top of the second inning, Clinton added to their lead with a two-run rally of McIntyre (1-2). Thomas Jones began the rally by reaching on an error - stole second - and then scored on a Marcos Rivera single to left center field. Two batters later, Connor Scott capped the rally with an RBI triple to right that put Clinton on top 3-0.
The support was more than enough for Jake Walters. In his first start of his professional career, he threw four innings allowing no runs and just one hit while walking two and striking out eight. Walters was given a no decision for his time - failing to qualify for the win.
Tyler Mitzel came on in relief and earned the win for Clinton despite allowing the only two Snappers' runs of the game.
Mitzel (3-3) set down the first two batters of the inning before allowing two infield singles and a walk that loaded the bases. Joseph Pena then singled to right scoring two runs but the game was ended on the play when right fielder Jerar Encarnacion threw out Cooper Goldby at third.
The LumberKings will head home to begin a four-game series over Memorial Day weekend with the Burlington Bees starting on Friday night. Clinton will throw right-handed pitcher Tanner Andrews (0-1, 5.31). Burlington will tap righty Cristopher Molina (1-1, 2.59).
