
Six-Run Third Drops Iowa

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (10-20) surrendered six runs in the third inning, losing 8-4 to the Columbus Clippers (12-19), Wednesday at Principal Park.
Matt Swarmer made his second start for Iowa and made it through two scoreless innings while allowing just two baserunners, both on walks. Swarmer ran into trouble and couldn't make it out of the third inning, allowing six runs on six hits including two three-run home runs.
Columbus' lead stayed at 6-0 until the fifth inning, when Iowa got four runs on one swing of the bat with a grand slam from Michael Hermosillo. Dakota Mekkes and Kyle Ryan kept the score locked at 6-4, combining to throw 3.1 scoreless frames.
The Clippers added two runs in the eighth off of I-Cubs reliever Ryan Meisinger, taking an 8-4 lead. Robert Broom and Kyle Dowdy tossed three innings of one-hit ball to close out the victory for Columbus' second straight over Iowa to start the series.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Dakota Mekkes lowered his ERA with Iowa to 1.65, tossing his fourth consecutive scoreless outing while also going two or more innings.
- In just his fifth game with the I-Cubs, Michael Hermosillo provided a spark to the offense with his grand slam in the fifth inning. The slam was his second home run of the year.
- For his second straight appearance, Matt Swarmer couldn't make it out of the third inning, getting knocked out of the game after allowing six runs in the third in both starts.
- Clippers' starter Kirk McCarty moved to 5-0 on the season with the victory. He spun six innings for Columbus, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three.
