INDIANAPOLIS - A six-run third inning proved too much for the Indianapolis Indians as the Iowa Cubs took the series opener on Tuesday night, 9-3.

After back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning by the Cubs, the Indians (25-23) wasted no time and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half. Will Craig launched a two-run home run to score Kevin Kramer with two outs to put Indy on the board.

Iowa (18-28) heated its bats and took the lead needed for their win in the top of the third inning. All with two outs and the bases clear, the Cubs scored six runs on five hits to tack on the winning and insurance runs with an 8-2 lead.

After six scoreless innings on offense, Indy scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI single from Cole Tucker, but that was the last time the Indians crossed the plate.

Cam Vieaux (L, 0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Indians as he surrendered seven runs (four unearned) on five hits in 2.2 innings. Adrian Sampson (W, 3-2) earned the win allowing two runs with six strikeouts.

The two teams face off again at Victory Field on Wednesday at 1:35 PM ET. RHP Mitch Keller (0-0, 3.18) will take the mound for the Indians against RHP Mike Hauschild (0-1, 5.68).
