Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (33-13) took down the Worcester Red Sox (29-20) in the first meeting between the two teams, a 9-7 final score on Tuesday night.
Jarren Duran put the WooSox on top at Polar Park, blasting a leadoff solo shot over the right centerfield wall in the bottom of the first. The long ball marked Duran's seventh of the season and fourth since May 18.
The RailRiders answered in the fourth against Worcester starter Tanner Houck, starting with an Estevan Florial single. Florial stole second, then took third on a groundout to the left side. First baseman Yairo Muñoz caught the throw, then shorthopped a throw that bounced over third baseman Jack Lopez, flew out of play and allowed Florial to sprint home. Houck allowed two straight singles then hit a batter, and after a mound visit, Houck plunked Kyle Holder with the bases loaded to bring the go-ahead run in.
That was the final run allowed by the right-hander, who gave up two runs on three hits over a Triple-A season-high four innings, along with four strikeouts. Houck threw 67 pitches, the most since returning from a right flexor injury earlier this month.
Trailing 2-1, Jeter Downs came to bat in the bottom of the inning and lined a game-tying homer over the left field wall, just reaching the base of the brand-new berm. Downs' sixth homer was also his fourth in the month of June.
But Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put up its second straight two-run frame in the fifth, working against WooSox reliever Marcus Walden. Andrew Velazquez started the frame with a single, then stole second. He stole third as Florial walked and stole home on the throw as Florial took second. After a groundout, Ryan LaMarre tripled to bring home the run to put the RailRiders up 4-2.
In the sixth, the WooSox Johan Mieses doubled with two on base. The first runner, Muñoz, scored, but the game's tying run-Jeter Downs-was thrown out at the plate by LaMarre to preserve the SWB lead. Downs exited the game following the play.
The RailRiders tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a Rob Brantly two-run homer, a Hoy Park RBI single and a two-run single from Socrates Brito. The five-run inning made it 9-3 entering the bottom of the ninth.
Jonathan Arauz brought home one with a sac-fly and Duran cracked his second homer, a three-run shot to make it 9-7, but SWB's Sal Romano got a strikeout to end the game and hand Worcester its sixth straight loss.
The WooSox continue the six-game series Wednesday at Polar Park versus the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders at 7:05 p.m. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage starts live at 6:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. Worcester's Stephen Gonsalves (3-2, 4.08) faces Nick Nelson (1-0, 2.28), who has made eight appearances for the Yankees this season.
