
Pigs drop opener in Trenton

(Trenton, NJ) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (21-28) continue to struggle as they lost to the Buffalo Bisons (28-19) 12-2 in their first meeting of the 2021 season. The Bisons recorded 11 hits against the IronPigs.
Ruben Tejada got Lehigh Valley on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when he hit an RBI single against T.J. Zeuch (2-3). The IronPigs would take a 1-0 lead. Buffalo tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Danny Jansen scored on an RBI groundout by Dilson Herrera.
Kevin Smith had four RBI in the game for the Bisons. He recorded his first three when he hit a three-run home run against Cristopher Sanchez (2-3) to give Buffalo a 4-1 lead. Sanchez pitched just three innings and allowed four runs before Brandon Kintzler tossed a scoreless inning of relief in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Smith added his fourth RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning when he hit a sacrifice fly against Jakob Hernandez to give the Bisons a 5-1 lead. Ryan Cordell smashed his 11th home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Bisons lead to 5-2.
The Bisons tagged Brady Lail for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-1 lead. They answered with three more runs against Damon Jones in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 12-1 lead.
Lehigh Valley was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.
The IronPigs and Bisons play at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening in Trenton.
