Wheeling Nailers News Release
JOHNSTOWN, PA - Despite Andrew Orpik's two goal night, the Wheeling Nailers fall short to the Reading Royals 4-2 Friday night at the Cambria County War Memorial.
It took just 42 seconds for the Royals to score in this one. Louis Liotti fired a soft shot from the point, which was stopped my Nailers goaltender Patrick Killeen, but Ryan Cruthers was all alone in front and was able to put back the rebound into the net to give his team the early a 1-0 lead. Wheeling tied the game at one after a newcomer Jason Weeks created a turnover in the slot and centered a perfect feed to Andrew Orpik who wristed a shot into the back of the net. Orpik scored again at 18:13 of the first, firing in a rebound shot past Royals netminder Michael Hutchinson, giving Wheeling a 2-1 lead at the end of the opening period.
Eric Castonguay came up big in the second period. Castonguay set up a play in front for John Scrymgeour who tied the game at two, squeezing a shot past Killeen at 7:32 of the second. Then two minutes later, Castonguay forced a turnover at the point on a Nailers power play, and took off on a 2-on-1 rush with Robert Slaney. Castonguay rushed to the circle and called his own number on the shot, ripping the puck past the gloveside of Killeen, to give the Royals the lead back 3-2.
In the third, fatigue took over on a shorthanded Nailers club who had a difficult time penetrating Reading's defense. However, Wheeling continued to battle for the equalizer, but the Royals added some insurance halfway through the third period on Tyler Murovich's fourth goal of the season, securing the 4-2 Royals win. Newcomers Christian Minella, Sam D'Agostino, and Jason Weeks made their Nailers debuts in the game.
Tomorrow Wheeling squares off against division rival Toledo on at 8:05 p.m. Tune into to The Mix 97.3 to listen to both games.
