Idaho Steelheads News Release
(Boise, ID) - Jay Cascalenda's wrap-around goal with just 1:15 to play lifted the Bakersfield Condors past the Idaho Steelheads Friday night, 4-3, in front of 4,357 fans at Qwest Arena in Boise.
It was sweet redemption for Cascalenda, who inadvertantly deflected in Idaho's game-winning goal in overtime Wednesday night. It was Cascalenda's first goal of the season.
The Condors started fast, getting a goal off of a turnover just 58 seconds into the game by Brad Snetsinger. Snetsinger struck again less than six minutes later, giving the Condors a two-goal lead before the Steelhead fans could get to their seats.
Idaho evened things up late in the first thanks to a pair of 5-on-3 power plays. Marty Flichel cashed in on the first with a blistering shot from outside the circles. His 15th of the season cut Bakersfield's lead to 2-1 at 16:49 of the first period. Barely 30 seconds later, Junior Lessard scored off a scramble in front of the net on another 5-on-3 power play, knotting the game at two after one period of play.
Each team scored once in the second period - Idaho's on a Tyler Ludwig finish off a nice Evan Barlow feed and Bakersfield's on a nifty top-shelf shot by Joel Broda past Tyler Beskorowany.
The score remained tied at 3-3 through virtually the entire third period. But Cascalenda got some speed down the far side of the ice, wrapped around the net, and tucked a shot through the legs of Beskorowany with 1:15 to play to give the Condors the victory. A flurry of Idaho shots in the final seconds failed to find the net and Idaho lost in regulation for just the second time in its last 14 games.
Brian Stewart stopped 25 of 28 shots in the win for Bakersfield. Beskorowany stopped 27 of 31 in the loss, falling to 10-4-4 on the season between the pipes for the Steelheads.
The two teams wrap up their three-game series Saturday night at Qwest Arena with the puck dropping at 7:10. Tickets are available at www.idahosteelheads.com or by calling 208.331.TIXS.
