Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (7-5) scored the first five runs and survived a ninth inning rally to defeat the Hagerstown Suns, 5-4, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday night. After losing four straight games, the shorebirds have now won three straight. All five Shorebirds runs were produced with two outs.
After three scoreless innings, the Shorebirds took the lead in the fourth. John Ruettiger, who went 3-for-4, hit a one out double. Two batters later, Wynston Sawyer singled to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 edge.
In the fifth, the Shorebirds added three runs. Gabriel Lino, who has six hits over the last two games, doubled to open the inning. With two outs, Sammie Starr singled up to the middle to score Lino. Following a Glynn Davis single through the left side of the infield, Ruettiger hit a two-run double to the left-center field gap to stretch the lead to 4-0.
The Shorebirds added the eventual winning run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Brenden Webb.
Miguel Chalas stymied the Suns over five scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed just two hits. Devin Jones entered in the sixth and held the Suns scoreless over three innings.
Dating back to four scoreless innings last night, the Shorebirds held the Grasshoppers and Suns scoreless for 12 straight innings.
The Suns cracked the scoreboard in the ninth inning against reliever Zach Fowler, who was added to the roster on Monday. Adrian Nieto singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Miller. Later in the inning, Jason Martinson hit a three-run homer over the left field wall to trim the lead to 5-4. With a runner at first, Fowler induced a groundout to first by J.P. Ramirez to end the game.
The Shorebirds and Suns meet on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:05pm for game two of the series. A marquee pitching matchup is scheduled. RHP Dylan Bundy, the fourth overall pick in 2011, makes his home debut against RHP Alex Meyer, the 23rd overall pick in 2011.
