Asheville Tourists News Release

The Asheville Tourists walloped the West Virginia Power on Monday night 16-0. The domination was the most impressive performance by the Tourists in recent memory. Will Swanner led the charge offensively finishing 3-for-4 with two Home Runs, a double, four runs scored, and seven RBI's. One of Swanner's round-trippers was a Grand Slam.

The pitching was just as effective with Vianney Mayo (1-1, 4.00) throwing a complete game shutout. The Tourists righty allowed just three hits and four base runners, while striking out nine. Mayo faced three hitters over the minimum and needed only 95 pitches on the night. Asheville's starter retired the first 12 batters of the game. Mayo's nine-inning, three hit, shutout is one of the greatest pitching performances in Asheville Tourists and South Atlantic League history.

The Tourists blew the game open in the top of the third. Asheville plated three runs and loaded the bases off Power starter Mike Jefferson (1-2, 7.59). Jefferson left the game with two-outs and the bases full and reliever Orlando Casto was called upon to retire Swanner. The Tourists catcher worked a full count before blasting a Grand Slam over the left field wall.

Leading 7-0, Asheville added four more runs in the fifth. After Trevor Story singled home Jared Simon, Swanner came to the plate and doubled off the top of the wall in center, just missing a Home Run. Story scored easily and Swanner would later score on Rosell Herrera's single to left.

Trailing 11-0, West Virginia received their first base-runner when Jose Osuna doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Osuna was left at second as Mayo retired the next three batters with ease.

In the seventh inning, Swanner drilled a two-run Homer off Rinku Singh to left-center field. The blast gave Asheville a 13-0 lead. The Power answered in the bottom of the seventh by recording their second hit of the game; a two-out single by Osuna. Mayo quickly retired the next batter to end the inning.

Leading off the ninth inning, Story gave himself a three-hit game by going yard off Jordan Cooper. The next batter was Swanner and Cooper decided that it would be a good idea to intentionally hit Asheville's catcher in the back with a fastball. Cooper was immediately thrown out of the game and Swanner's teammates erupted from the dugout with animosity towards West Virginia's reliever. Swanner and the Tourists took the high road and did not engage Cooper or any Power players. They let the scoreboard do the talking.

Jose Rivera singled home two more runners in the inning and the only question left was would Mayo finish off his masterpiece. Mayo did just that. In the bottom of the ninth, Josh Bell dug in with two outs and a runner at third. Mayo stuck out Bell for the third time in the game and Asheville celebrated the well-earned victory.

The 16 runs Asheville scored and 17 hits recorded were both season-highs. The Tourists have won seven of their last eight and are currently on a four-game winning streak.
