Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. (April 16, 2012) -- Hickory outfielder Zach Cone drove in the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning as the Crawdads defeated the Intimidators 4-3 on Monday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. Cone finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and his third home run of the season as the Crawdads won the first game of a three-game series.
In a tie game in the bottom of the eighth, Luis Sardinas legged out an infield single to lead off the inning and went first-to-third on Rougned Odor's bloop single to right field. Two batters later, Cone cashed Sardinas as Hickory took its third and final lead of the game.
Steve McCray (0-2) took the loss for Kannapolis, allowing one run on three hits in one inning of work, while Randol Rojas (1-0) earned the win, pitching the final 3 and 1/3 innings for Hickory, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Hickory struck early on a Rougned Odor two-run home run (2) in the bottom of the first inning.
The Intimidators had a chance to get on the board in the top of the second inning, but on a would-be Mark Haddow sacrifice fly, Rangel Ravelo left third base early and was doubled off to end the inning.
Keenyn Walker reached base on an error to lead off the third inning and advanced to second on a throwing error by Jackson. Grant Buckner singled Walker home to put the Intimidators on the board.
Michael Johnson doubled with one out in the sixth inning, and two batters later Kevan Smith singled him home to tie the game, 2-2, and chase Hickory's starter Luke Jackson from the game. Jackson finished the night allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Zach Cone blasted his second home run off Intimidators starter Blair Walters this season to put the Crawdads back in front 3-2 and chase Walters from the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Intimidators tied the game in the top of the seventh on Grant Buckner's second RBI-single of the game. Buckner finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in his first game with Kannapolis and joining the team from extended spring training.
This is the seventh game the Intimidators have played this season decided in the final at-bats and sixth 1-run game. The Intimidators are 4-3 in those games.
Kannapolis and Hickory play the second game of this three-game series on Tuesday at L.P. Frans Stadium at 6:00 p.m. as Intimidators starter RHP Daniel Webb (0-1, 8.59) duels Hickory's LHP Victor Payano (1-0, 1.80). The game will be broadcasting online at www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com .
The Intimidators return home for a four-game series against the Lexington Legends on Thursday, April 19. The team will have post-game fireworks on Saturday, April 21. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
