Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 16-0 to the Asheville Tourists on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. Vianney Mayo tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout for the Tourists, who also saw catcher Will Swanner drive in seven runs on two home runs and a double.
The Tourists struck for seven runs in the third inning against Power starter Mike Jefferson. After the first out was recorded, the next six batters reached by hit, walk, or error. Orlando Castro came on in relief of Jefferson with two outs and the deficit at 3-0 and surrendered a grand slam to Swanner to extend the advantage.
West Virginia did not get its first hit off Mayo until the bottom of the fifth. Jose Osuna doubled to break up the no-hitter but was stranded on second.
Asheville added four runs in the fifth, including one on a two-base hit by Swanner, and plated two more in the seventh on Swanner's second home run of the game.
In the ninth, Trevor Story led off with a home run and made it a 14-0 game. Power reliever Jordan Cooper hit Swanner with a pitch and was ejected. The Tourists scored twice off of Robbie Kilcrease to close out the offense for the night. All told, Asheville reached on 17 hits and capitalized on five Power errors, all of which were season highs allowed by West Virginia.
Jefferson (1-2) took the loss while Mayo (1-0) garnered the win. Alen Hanson reached on a double in the ninth to extend his club-best hitting streak to eight games for West Virginia.
The Power and Tourists continue this three game series at 7:05 pm on Tuesday night. Matt Benedict gets the start for West Virginia against Asheville's Chris Jensen.
