Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets struggled offensively for the fourth day in a row in a 5-1 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs in the opener of a three-game series between the teams on Monday night. The loss is Augusta's fourth straight.
The GreenJackets were held to just four hits and have been outscored by a 27-2 margin during their current four-game losing skid. Two of those four games were shutouts.
Defense failed the GreenJackets as well on Monday as Augusta committed four errors - three of which led to runs - in the contest. Two of those came in the first inning after the GreenJackets had already recorded two outs. Dante Bichette Jr. drew a walk to keep the inning alive for Tyler Austin, who reached on an error to put two on with two outs. Gary Sanchez singled home a run to put the RiverDogs ahead 1-0. Ben Gamel hit a tapper to the mound that looked to end the inning, but Edwin Escobar went wide of the first base bag with the throw to allow another run to score.
Charleston added two more in the third on Austin's second RBI triple in as many nights and Sanchez's RBI single to push the advantage to 4-0. Escobar (1-1) was chased in the inning after allowing four runs - two earned - on three hits and a walk while striking out two in 2.1 innings.
A bright spot for the GreenJackets came in the fourth when Jose Cuevas homered on the first pitch of the inning to cut the deficit to three. It was the first GreenJackets home run at Lake Olmstead Stadium this season and just the team's second all year. Charleston got the run back in the fifth though on Gamel's RBI single to jump out to a 5-1 edge.
Jose Campos (3-0) earned his second straight win against the GreenJackets and third in as many starts this season. Despite allowing his first (and only) run of the year on his first home run surrendered, Campos still turned in a solid outing. In five innings of one-run ball, Campos allowed four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
The GreenJackets look to end the losing skid at four games on Tuesday with Clayton Blackburn (0-1, 4.32) taking the mound against Caleb Cotham (1-0, 3.00) in a battle of righties. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
