
Charleston's Tyler Austin Named SAL Player of the Week

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs outfielder/first baseman Tyler Austin received the first South Atlantic League Player of the Week Award on Monday. Austin received the award for the period of April 5-15 during which he hit .438/.471/1.031 in 8 games with a league most 10 extra base hits (4 doubles, 3 triples, 3 homers) and 9 RBIs. Through April 15, Austin led the South Atlantic League in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS and has a seven-game hit streak. Austin also has a streak of five straight games with at least one extra-base hit.
Austin 's early season exploits include a ninth inning three-run homer on Sunday that won the game against the Rome Braves. He also had a two-homerun game on April 12. His performance has helped propel the team to a 7-3 record so far this season, good for first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.
A native of Conyers, Georgia, the 20-year old was the 13th round pick of the 2010 draft by the New York Yankees. A 6'2, 200lb. right-handed hitter, Austin won the New York-Penn League player of the week award once last season while with the Staten Island Yankees. In 2011, Austin played for both the Gulf Coast League Yankees and the SI Yankees and had a cumulative .354 average with 26 extra-base hits and a .997 OPS.
After finishing up their seven game road trip Wednesday night in Augusta, the RiverDogs will return home to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Thursday night for a four game series against the West Virginia Power, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
