Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads took an early lead in the bottom of the first and never trailed, en route to the 4-3 win against the Kannapolis Intimidators, before 1,538 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday evening.
Hickory SS Luis Sardinas started the bottom of the first by reaching on an error, getting the frame's first batter on base. 2B Rougned Odor then crushed a two-run home run, his second in the last two games, over the right field wall for the 2-0 lead against LHP Blair Walters and Kannapolis (6-6).
The Intimidators got on the board with an unearned run against RHP Luke Jackson in the top of the third, then tied it in the top of the sixth. With one out in the sixth, 2B Michael Johnson doubled to left-center field. Jackson struck out the next batter, but C Kevan Smith placed an RBI single to right-center, plating Johnson and tying it 2-2. RHP Randol Rojas (W, 1-0) took over on the mound and quickly ended the frame with a strikeout.
The Crawdads (7-5) retook the lead promptly in the bottom of the sixth inning. With no one on and two away, RF Zach Cone launched a solo shot over the left-center field wall, lifting the 'Dads in front, 3-2.
Kannapolis, though, squared the score again in the top of the seventh. RF Mark Haddow worked a one-out walk to get on, then raced to third on a single by CF Keenyn Walker. Rojas quickly picked off Walker for the second out, but DH Grant Buckner muscled a broken-bat, RBI single to shallow right field for his second RBI knock of the day, tying the score at 3-3.
Hickory again moved in front in the bottom of the eighth against RHP Steve McCray (L, 0-2). SS Luis Sardinas led off with an infield single and advanced to third on a base hit by Odor, who was retired on the play after rounding first base too far. Kannapolis intentionally walked 3B Hanser Alberto, bringing Cone to the plate. The 'Dads right fielder came through, driving an RBI single to shallow left, bringing home Sardinas for the 4-3 advantage.
The Intimidators threatened in the top of the ninth, getting two men on, but Rojas got out of it by striking out back-to-back batters, closing the 4-3 win for the Crawdads.
