
Shorebirds Squander Lead and Fall 10-7

Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored nine unanswered runs including six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds 10-7 at NewBridge Bank Park on Tuesday night. The Shorebirds have lost nine straight games as the Grasshoppers completed a five-game sweep.
The Shorebirds sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to build a 7-1 lead in the top of third. The seven runs in the inning were the second most in a single inning this season. The Shorebirds scored ten runs in the fourth inning against Greensboro at Perdue Stadium on June 30. Garabez Rosa, who doubled twice in the third, ignited the frame with a leadoff double. Then, John Ruettiger extended his hit streak to six games with a single to center to score Rosa, which tied the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Jacob Julius stung a two-run double down the right field line to give the 'Birds a 3-1 edge. Michael Ohlman followed with an RBI liner to right-center to stretch the lead to 4-1. Jeremy Nowak followed with a sacrifice fly to left-center to make it a 5-1 game. Michael Mooney and Rosa connected on RBI hits to give the Shorebirds a 7-1 edge.
The Grasshoppers pulled within 7-4 entering the eighth inning. Ryan Fisher and Dan Black hit back-to-back doubles against reliever Ryan Palsha to cut the deficit to 7-5. Then, Isaac Galloway hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-6. With a runner at third and one out, David Walters came out of the bullpen. Marcell Ozuna hit a soft tapper to third and Ty Kelly's throw to the plate was low, allowing Galloway to score. Mark Canha hit a three-run homer to give the 'Hoppers a 10-7 lead.
Michael Brady entered in the ninth inning and retired the Shorebirds in order to end the game.
The Shorebirds managed just one hit over the six innings. Four Greensboro relievers combined to hold the Shorebirds to just three hits over the final 6.2 innings. Greensboro starter Robert Morey was yanked after 2.1 innings when the Shorebirds tattooed him for seven runs in the third.
Miguel Mejia earned the win with two flawless innings for the Grasshoppers while David Walters was tagged with the loss.
Orioles fourth rounder Kyle Simon entered in the seventh for Luis Noel and struck out side in a scoreless inning of work.
The Shorebirds return to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday, September 1 for the first of five games against the West Virginia Power to close the season. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled starter for game one of the series.
