Charleston RiverDogs News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Darrell Ceciliani went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI as the Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 11-8, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Savannah took the series three games to two and improved to 38-27 this half and 77-57 overall with the win, while Charleston regressed to 26-39 and 52-83.

Charleston benefited from some spotty Savannah defense to forge a 2-0 advantage in the second inning against Taylor Whitenton (5-4). Jeff Farnham reached on a fielding error by Wilfredo Tovar at shortstop, allowing Jose Mojica and Taylor Grote to score.

Keyed by Ceciliani, the Sand Gnats evened the ledger with a two-spot of their own against Shane Greene (4-14) own in the bottom of the third. Ceciliani tripled home Alonzo Harris, and touched the plate himself when Rafael Fernandez reached on an error.

Savannah turned the contest into a blowout in the fourth, tallying seven markers to move in front, 9-2. Tovar walked to drive home a run and give the Sand Gnats their first lead, and another walk and a hit batsman ended his evening as he departed behind 5-2.

Tommy Kahnle emerged out of the Charleston bullpen and could not mitigate the damage, as the deficit swelled to seven runs. Joe Bonfe singled in two runs, before Blake Forsythe ripped a double down the left field line to send two more Sand Gnats plateward for a 9-2 lead.

Greene was tagged for eight runs in 3.2 frames, allowing just three hits, but walking five and hitting a batter to lead to most of the damage. The Daytona State College product did manage to strike out six.

The RiverDogs got one run back in the top of the fifth versus Whitenton, but the righty pushed his mark back over .500 by protecting the lead. Whitenton yielded the three runs (one earned) over his 5.0 innings, while walking three and punching out five.

A five-run seventh brought the RiverDogs back into the ballgame, as Guillaume Leduc allowed the Sand Gnats lead to shrink to 9-8.

Jose Toussen started the ball rolling with a RBI single, and Kevin Mahoney pulled Charleston within 9-6 with one of his own as Shane Brown scored too when Ceciliani made an errant throw back into the infield. Kelvin De Leon roped a RBI double to left for the fourth run of the frame, and Mojica punctuated the rally with a run-scoring groundout.

Brett Gerritse was the next hurler into the game for Charleston, and was greeted rudely as Savannah tallied two runs to build the cushion back to three runs at 11-8. Ceciliani reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Forsythe, and Tovar produced another score with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Ronny Morla got the call out of the Sand Gnats bullpen in the ninth, and secured his tenth save by making quick work of the RiverDogs with a 1-2-3 inning.

With the road portion of the 2011 season complete, the RiverDogs enjoy their final off-day before welcoming the Asheville Tourists to town for a five-game series beginning on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Mike Gipson (0-2, 6.23 ERA) is expected to get the ball for Charleston, versus southpaw Tyler Matzek (4-4, 4.89 ERA) of the Colorado Rockies affiliate.
