South Atlantic League Announces 2011 Annual All-Star Team

August 30, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) News Release


St. Petersburg. Florida-Eric Krupa, President of the South Atlantic League, announced the selection of the 2011 Annual All-Star Team. The All-Star Team was voted on by the 14 South Atlantic League Team's Field Managers, General Managers, Sports Writers and Broadcasters for a total of 56 votes.

The Annual All-Star Team was highlighted by the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Most Outstanding Major League Prospect and Most Valuable Player. Shawn Sanford of the Augusta GreenJackets was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Sanford has a 10-9 record and an 2.47 ERA in 29 games. Bryce Harper, outfielder for the Hagerstown Suns, was chosen as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Harper batted .318 with 82 hits and 14 home runs in 72 games before being promoted to Harrisburg in the Eastern League. Hickory Crawdads shortstop Jurickson Profar was selected as the Most Valuable Player. Profar is batting .285 with 11 home runs and 61 RBIs in 109 games.

Ryan Ellis and Glenn Abbott of the Savannah Sand Gnats have been selected as Manager and Coach, respectively, of the 2010 Annual All-Star Team. The Hickory Crawdads placed a league-high three players on the Annual All-Star Team. Jurickson Profar (shortstop and Most Valuable Player) is joined by Odubel Herrera (second base) and Christian Villanueva (utility infielder). Three teams each placed two players on the All-Star Team. Representing the Augusta GreenJackets are Shawn Sanford (right-handed pitcher and Most Outstanding Pitcher) and Adam Duvall (third base). The Kannapolis Intimidators contributed Dan Black (first base) and Brady Shoemaker (utility outfielder). Jesse Biddle (left-handed pitcher) and Jim Murphy (designated hitter) represent the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Asheville Tourists, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Greenville Drive and the Rome Braves each had one representative on the All-Star Team. Rome's Evan Gattis (catcher) is joined by Greenville's Brandon Jacobs (outfielder), Asheville's Kyle Parker (outfielder) and Greensboro's Christian Yelich (outfielder).
