San Antonio Missions News Release
DES MOINES - The Missions earned a much needed win Wednesday night and they got it thanks in part to a career-high six-RBI performance from Travis Shaw, who led the club to a 9-4 win over the Iowa Cubs.
Shaw unloaded two three-run homers while Tyrone Taylor unleashed a mammoth two-run blast of his own to back an outstanding start by Shelby Miller (1-1), which pulled the Missions to within 1 1/2-games of first place Round Rock. The Express blew a late lead in Memphis and lost by a run on Wednesday.
Miller worked a season-high six innings. He allowed only three hits while fanning six. The only run charged to him was unearned. Deolis Guerra and Ray Black both worked a hitless inning before Taylor Williams served up a three-run homer to Robel Garcia in the last of the ninth.
Shaw's performance was his third multi-homer effort with San Antonio. His two longballs were part of a 10 hit attack that featured seven extra base hits. The Missions started the night hitting .239 with 24 runs over the six previous games. They had recorded the third lowest slugging percentage in the league since losing Mauricio Dubon (trade) and Trent Grisham (promotion) at the end of July.
San Antonio snapped an eight game road losing streak, which was the club's longest in seven years. They also put a halt to Iowa's six game winning streak at Principal Park.
The series concludes Thursday afternoon.
