Norfolk Admirals News Release
WORCESTER, MA - Goaltender Troy Grosenick stopped 24 of 25 shots to help lead the Worcester Sharks to a 5-1 victory over the Norfolk Admirals at the DCU center Saturday night. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for Norfolk (19-13-1-4).
After a scoreless first, the Sharks took a 1-0 lead early in the middle frame in an unusual fashion. After consecutive minutes of continuous play to start the period, referee Dave Banfield called for a video review to take a look at some action that took place in front of the Admirals net at the 39-second mark.
After a lengthy review, a goal was awarded to Worcester's Freddie Hamilton. Both teams seemed a bit shocked by the ruling, but the shorthanded goal gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead.
The Admirals responded nearly five minutes later, on a power play marker by Devante Smith-Pelly. A perfectly executed passing play featured Jesse Blacker sending the puck across the ice to the backside of the crease. Smith-Pelly directed the pass into the back of the net past Worcester netminder Troy Grosenick to tie the game at one.
Worcester's Adam Comrie fielded a pass in the slot and wristed a shot that beat Norfolk goaltender Frederik Andersen at 12:15 of the period. Comrie's marker helped the Sharks reclaim the lead at a 2-1 count.
The Sharks bit the Admirals again at 15:32 of the second on the power play. Yani Gourde raced past two Norfolk defenders en route to the net, and flipped a shot past Andersen to extend the lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
The Sharks continued to press in the third, taking advantage of a miscue by Andersen. Andersen went to play the puck behind the net, but was quickly joined by Worcester's Freddie Hamilton. Hamilton took the puck away and centered it out in front to Daniil Tarasov who put it into the unattended net. Tarasov's 11th tally of the season put the Sharks on top by three.
Norfolk started to create more chances in the third, but was unable to find the back of the net. Worcester sealed the game 5-1 on a Dan DaSilva marker at 17:24.
Grosenick earns the win stopping 24 of 25 shots faced, while Andersen takes the loss allowing five goals on 35 shots.
