Domingue Dominates for First Shutout as Pirates Blank Sound Tigers

Bridgeport, CT - Louis Domingue made 31 saves for his first career AHL shutout as the Pirates defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 2-0 on Saturday Night. Andy Miele and Brett Hextall provided the offense for the Pirates in the win.

Andy Miele got the Pirates on the board first, beating Kenny Reiter after a feed from Jordan Szwarz at 11:29 of the first. Miele's goal, his 16th of the season, ties him with Norm Batherson for 15th in career goals with 51 and 13th in career points with 139. Lucas Lessio was also credited with an assist on the goal. Towards the end of the period, a number of penalties resulted in a Pirates 5 on 3, but they were unable to capitalize and ended the period leading by a goal. The Pirates outshot the Sound Tigers 13 to 10 in the period.

Brett Hextall doubled the Pirates lead in the second. Hextall took a feed from Corey Trivino just 2:19 into the second for his 7th goal of the year and put it past Reiter to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. . Tobias Rieder also assisted on Hextall's goal, and Trivino's assist was the first point of his AHL career. Despite the Sound Tigers outshooting the Pirates 12 -7 for the period, Louis Domingue stood strong in the Pirates net, stopping them all.

The Sound Tigers added 9 more shots in the third period, including an extended 6 on 5 with the goaltender pulled, but Domingue controlled the game, making save after save to keep the Sound Tigers off the board. Domingue finished the night with 31 saves for the shutout, the first shutout for the Pirates since Mark Visentin blanked Albany 2-0 on February 2nd, 2013. The shutout was also the first Pirates road shutout since December 15, 2012 against the Connecticut Whale in Hartford. Domingue improves to 6-1-1 this season, and the Pirates improve to 15-13-1-5 on the year.

The Pirates travel to Worcester tomorrow for a matinée against the Sharks at the DCU Center.
