Worcester Sharks News Release

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Sharks (16-15-2-1, 35pts) exploded for three second period goals and won their third straight home game with an impressive 5-1 victory over the Norfolk Admirals (19-13-1-4, 43pts) in front of 3,616 fans at the DCU Center in on Saturday evening. Worcester concludes their 3-in-3 weekend at home as Boston Garden Legend Rene Rancourt will perform the national anthem before the 3pm start vs. the Portland Pirates on Sunday.

Freddie Hamilton, Adam Comrie, Yanni Gourde, Daniil Tarasov, and Dan DaSilva scored for Worcester while Troy Grosenick was strong in net as he made 24 saves in his 8th victory of the season. The two teams combined for 64 penalty minutes in a feisty affair as Worcester put an end to the Admirals three game win streak.

Before the game, the Sharks hosted the first of five high school hockey doubleheaders this season. The Shrewsbury girls' varsity team (5-1-1) defeated the Algonquin Tomahawks ( 5-3-0) 3-2 behind a 25 save performance by netminder Tiana Army while the Shrewsbury boys' varsity team remained undefeated (7-0-0) with a 5-0 win over Algonquin (3-2-2) led by a pair of goals by Jack Quinlivan.

Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period as Worcester fired 12 shots on netminder Frederick Anderson - fresh off his assignment from the Anaheim Ducks. Troy Grosenick made six first period saves while the fans enjoyed a true heavyweight bout between Jimmy Bonneau (8th FM) and Zack Stortini (22nd FM) at 6:11 in a physical period.

The offense picked up in the middle frame with the first goal awarded to Freddie Hamilton (12th) at 38 seconds while the Sharks were shorthanded after a video replay review several minutes after the score. Hamilton's shot beat Anderson and went through the net and was confirmed by video replay. Norfolk tied the score at 1-1 as Devante Smith-Pelly (11th) finished off a nice string of passes on the Admirals power play at 6:04 with a tip in past goaltender Troy Grosenick. Worcester went ahead 2-1 after Yanni Gourde stole the puck in the offensive zone and sent a perfect pass to Adam Comrie (2nd) who then ripped a hard low shot past the glove of Frederick Anderson at 12:15. Yanni Gourde (1st) struck on the power play after he slithered through the middle and past two defenders and slid the puck through the pads of Anderson at 15:32. Worcester outshot Norfolk 17-6 in the second period and took a 3-1 advantage into the locker room through 40 minutes.

Worcester would add two more goals in the third period as Daniil Tarasov (11th) found the back of the net at 3:20 after a great fore-check and pass by Freddie Hamilton and Dan DaSilva (4th) put the game away with a wicked shot just inside the crossbar at 17:24 to put the Sharks ahead 5-1. Two near line brawls nearly broke out in the final two minutes as 26 penalty minutes were dished out before the final horn sounded.

The Sharks overall record improves to 16-15-2-1, 35pts and 8-7-0-1, 17pts at the DCU Center this season.
