Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - Willmar sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored seven runs, including five on two-out RBIs, to take an 8-2 lead and hold on for a 9-6 victory against the Duluth Huskies at Bill Taunton Stadium Thursday night.
Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) had two hits, a stolen base and an RBI in the big inning, while Hunter Dozier (Stephen F. Austin) had a two-out, two-RBI double in the frame. Mitch Rowan (San Francisco) followed with an RBI double to score Dozier. Brennan Moore (Texas Tech) also had a two-out RBI hit in the fourth in his Stingers' debut.
Scott Lieser (St. Cloud State) improved to 5-1 after allowing only two runs on seven hits in six complete innings. The right-hander did not walk a single batter and struck out two. Tanner Banks (Utah) made his first appearance for the Stingers after pitching the 2011 season for the team. He tossed one scoreless inning of relief and struck out one. Michael Hahn (Nebraska Kearney) also made his debut with the Stingers and was charged with four runs in one-plus inning.
With the tying run on deck in the ninth, Brady Anderson (Florida Gulf Coast) entered the game and recorded the final two outs, including one strikeout, to earn his 11th save of the season and secure the Stingers 9-6 victory.
In the first inning, Forrestt Allday (Central Arkansas) set a new Northwoods League record with his 61st walk of the year, passing Ben Magsig of Alexandria in 2011 for the most in a single season. Allday finished the game with three walks to establish his new record total at 63 with 16 games remaining in the season.
Suchy finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to raise his average to .362. He now ranks sixth in the Northwoods League in batting average in addition to having the second-most RBIs in the league. Suchy's 47 runs scored this season place him third on the league leaderboard in that category.
The Stingers were outhit by the Huskies 14-9 in the contest. Aside from Suchy, Max Kuhn (Kentucky) had the only other multi-hit effort for Willmar, going 2-for-4 with a double. Zach Benson (Stephen F. Austin) had two RBIs in the contest - each on sacrifice flies - to increase his season total to 17.
With the victory, Willmar (11-8) is now 1/2 game behind Duluth (12-8) for first place in the second-half standings. The Stingers will have a chance to overtake the Huskies with a 7:05 p.m. game Friday at Bill Taunton Stadium. It's Jordan Smith Bobblehead Night presented by CDS. The first 300 fans will receive a token to be redeemed for the bobble head during the fifth inning of the game.
