La Crosse Loggers News Release
LA CROSSE, WIS. (July 26, 2012) - Matt Chapman (Cal State Fullerton) drove the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the third inning over the left field wall for a bases clearing grand slam, his second home run of the year. It was all the offensive firepower the team would need with Josh Frye (Long Beach State) allowing one run over six innings and striking out 10 batters.
Combine those two with three scoreless relief innings, two by Zach Wright (Washington) and one by Jonathan Van Eaton (Memphis), the La Crosse Loggers were victorious over the visiting Battle Creek Bombers, 4-1. Van Eaton earned his twelfth save of the year. The Loggers' win extended the Bombers' losing streak to five games.
The Bombers took an early one-run lead in the top of the second inning through two singles and a wild pitch, which scored Sikes Orvis. Frye allowed only one hit in his other five innings pitched. He faced only two batters over the minimum thanks to picking off a runner at first base in the third inning and Tyler Servais (Princeton) gunning down a base runner on a steal attempt in the fifth.
The ten strikeouts by Frye was the second highest output by any Loggers pitcher this season, right behind Jacob Dorris' (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) mark of 12 strikeouts in six relief innings on June 13. This was Frye's first start of the year for the Loggers and he is now 1-0.
Cole Swanson (1-3) walked all three batters who scored on Chapman's home run. He also walked two other batters and gave up a single. Swanson finished his night by throwing 5 2/3 innings with four earned runs allowed on two hits and five walks. He struck out four.
Kevin Kramer (UCLA) was responsible for the other two Loggers hits, both singles. He also scored a run and stole a base. Orvis was the only batter to get more than one hit for the Bombers, going 2-4 with a run scored and one stolen base.
The La Crosse Loggers (36-17 overall, 10-8 second half) will start Jake Stassi (3-0) against the Battle Creek Bombers (19-34, 5-13) in game two of the three-game series on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Stassi will matchup against Kyle Teague (3-3). After the game on Friday, don't forget that it is another Fireworks Extravaganza, with the post-game fireworks show sponsored by Kwik Trip.
