Beetles knock off Mankato

Alexandria Beetles News Release

Mankato, MN - Steve Weber dominated the MoonDogs through seven innings of three-hit baseball and relievers Alex Guilford and Anthony Bazzani threw a pair of hitless innings to preserve the victory as the Alexandria Beetles (22-32, 9-10) knocked off Mankato (38-16, 10-9) in the first game for both sides after the All-Star break.

With the win, Weber improved to 2-5 on the season with both wins coming against the MoonDogs. In two outings, Weber has allowed just one earned run in 12.1 innings while surrendering only six hits.

The Beetles struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning as Ryan Padilla and Dylan Raper each delivered RBI singles off starter Adam Mott.

But that was the only offense for either side until the seventh inning as Weber and Mott matched each other pitch for pitch. After allowing the two runs, Mott faced just two above the minimum in the next four innings and departed after six innings and seven strikeouts. Meanwhile, Weber was perfect through three and allowed just one hit through six.

Mankato reliever Kevin Corey did not share the same success as the starters when he entered in the seventh. Corey threw 30 pitches, 21 out of the strike zone in .2 of an inning allowing three runs on two singles and four walks. Ben Moore deposited a two-RBI single into right field and Stephen McGee was walked with the bases loaded as Alexandria extended the advantage to 5-0.

The MoonDogs broke the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles and an RBI groundout and sacrifice fly off Weber, with only one of the runs earned, and scraped another back off Guilford in the eighth on a pair of Beetle errors.

An engaged Alexandria side regained the three-run advantage when Rob Case singled home Ben Moore with two outs in the ninth and Bazzani, consistently hitting 95 and touching 96 on the radar gun, struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his 11th save. Bazzani has pitched 4.1 innings against Mankato this year and has struck out 11 MoonDogs.

Stephen McGee finished 2-2 with three walks for the Beetles though Will Fulmer, who walked in the first and seventh innings to extend his on-base streak to 37 games, was held hitless to break his 23-game hitting streak.

The Beetles and MoonDogs conclude their mini two-game set on Friday with a 7:05 CDT first pitch.
