Beetles knocked off by Huskies
August 12, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release
Duluth, MN - After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Alexandria Beetles allowed 14 unanswered runs, including nine in the fourth inning, as the Duluth Huskies (38-31, 19-16) knocked off the Beetles (32-37, 19-15) by a 14-2 final on Saturday.
Needing victories in their lost two games combined with Willmar losses, little went right for the Beetles as the Stingers, with a 9-2 victory, officially eliminated Alexandria from playoff contention.
By that time, Alexandria's 1-0 lead had been erased as the Huskies took the head-to-head series lead 5-4 over the Beetles.
Before the Beetles opened the scoring in the top of the second, Ben Moore set another Northwoods League record with a double in the first inning for his 163rd and 164th total bases of the season surpassing Shaun Cooper's 163 from last season with the MoonDogs. The extra-base hit also tied Cooper's Northwoods League record of 38 set last year.
In the second, Dallas Hannah opened the inning with a single to second and advanced to second on a Blake Barrow walk. With two outs, a Josh Carpenter grounder was thrown away allowing Hannah to score the first run of the game.
The Huskies answered right back in the second with a pair of hits, the second an RBI single from Max Duval opening up his three-hit, three-RBI game.
Duluth took its first lead of the ballgame in the third off starter Mitchell Babb with a pair of hits, an error and a hit by pitch to plate two runs as the Huskies led 3-1 after three. An inning later, the ballgame was turned into a blowout as 14 men came to the plate and the Huskies scored nine runs on seven hits against Babb and reliever Corey Fitzgerald. Husky starting pitcher Max MacNabb, forced to bat due to an injury to leftfielder James Ramsay that forced the designated hitter into the field, walked in a run and singled in two more in his first two plate appearances of the year in the inning.
A Duval homer in the eighth inning against reliever Michael Stocke, who pitched three solid innings inducing two double plays in the process, made the score 14-1 before Alexandria scored the final run of the ballgame on a Tanner Vavra single in the ninth that scored Blake Barrow.
The Beetles conclude their 2012 Northwoods League season in Duluth on Sunday with a 5:05 CDT first pitch between Alexandria's Scott Sanderson and Duluth's Joey Novak, the starter for the North in the 2012 All-Star Game.
